What is love? Everyone has their own interpretation of it and no real answer to it exists.
This is how our love life story began on one bright sunny day on June 21st 08.
I have never believed in fate though I tend to be somewhat religious. When i first saw her picture I was very attracted to her exotic features. I was very certain she was mixed between japanese and Indian. Curiosity and attraction led me to her. I was flabbergasted when I found out that she was pur Bengali blood, so proud of her culture and origins even though she had been born and bred in Toronto.
Some people believe in astrology and are very big on it, I never was. She decided to talk to me because we both fell in the same horoscope and next thing i remember is we were riding on Santa's white horse chasing the wind. We were meeting every day in different corners of Toronto eating exotic dishes and getting to know each other.
Like every Indian movie, our love story was full of conflicts and soap opera. Little history browsing will refresh your mind that Pakistanis and Bangladeshi people still hold grudges against each other from 1971 separation. Our parents were totally against us dating each other and this led to some tension which we did not let it affect us and braced ourselves for a battle.
As Pear Buck writes, "The young do not know enough to be prudent, and therefore they attempt the impossible -- and achieve it, generation after generation." We took baby steps to win the hearts of our family members and set a precedent for the younger ones to follow. Throughout this whole struggle to gain the support of our families we never ever doubted each other.
Our engagement ceremony was at 5th Element in downtown where I bent on my knee and asked her to marry me. She did. We are counting down to our wedding day and just feel so proud to bring two cultures together in one hall and rekindle love and new beginnings.
I have travelled far and wide, taught in Asia and backpacked through Europe and I could not describe my feelings better than Amy Tam, "I am like a falling star who has finally found her place next to another in a lovely constellation, where we will sparkle in the heavens forever."
